Freelance product management

Can it make sense for a company to outsource some or all of its product management? How would it work effectively?

Some interesting quick thoughts by Harry Brignull on nature of current UX consultancy work - http://www.90percentofeverything.com/2010/04/14/overcoming-egocentrism-where-to-next-for-the-ux-research-industry/.
I imagine he'd argue against outsourcing as you want your PM entrenched in the business and constantly engaged with the customers, rather that working on piecemeal projects.

I've worked with a PM/UX consultant in the past and it was a phenomenal experience as the consultant brought a wealth of experience and really helped us on the project. To Brignull's point though, her greatest contribution was teaching the PMs at the company some of the tips and tricks of effective product management, which we were able to apply after her participation ended.
